I randomly found an LJ post with a pretty thorough breakdown of the "Generation Kill" DVD extras.
"That said, the commentaries are basically it in terms of awesomesauce extras. Of course I first listened to Alexander, James, and the director dude's. And did I mention awesome? Like I can't even describe. Sure, I saw the excerpts of the Alexander-stripping-off exchange, but there were so many other gems in there. James talking about how he hated Lee Tergesen!"
Exsqueeze me? Yeah, I never could stand that dood. ;P

ETA:. I figured y'all would know I was joking about James, and no, I don't rly think he hates Lee (thus the winking emoticon). I don't rly plan on watching the extras, but thought others would like to read about them and I liked the way [livejournal.com profile] alethialia's post was jampacked with schtuF about it.

snagged from [livejournal.com profile] lee_love

"Generation Kill" will be released on DVD Dec. 16.

Yay!
An appalling lack of Lee, fine, but overall, a series that is worth watching.

Dunno if ya seen this, but there's some real funny Lee stuff around 3:20. He purrs. Yup.There's no other way to describe it.He'll definitely turn ya on. And later on....Billy and Lee being described as two obnoxious kids in the back seat of a car on a family trip..LOL Yup, that's Lee.

"A well-done conclusion to an excellent miniseries."
by Brian Zoromski

EXCERPT:

"This final episode featured the most screen time in the series for Lee Tergesen as reporter Evan Wright. Tergesen plays Wright understatedly, most of the time showing up in the background with a surprised look or a smirk on his face. Tergesen can definitely handle more, as fans of HBO's Oz can tell you, and a glimpse of his full acting ability was seen here, as he has a great conversation with Antonio Espera (Jon Huertas), follows and talks with translator Meesh (Nabil Elouahabi), ridiculously imitates the serpentine running method from the Peter Falk-Alan Arkin movie The In-Laws, and has a telling conversation with "Godfather" Ferrando (Chance Kelly). Tergesen has an everyman type quality about him that suits the role perfectly."

Public Service Announcement:
The Best Film of the Year is on HBO

by Eugene Novikov Aug 23rd 2008 // 4:32PM

EXCERPT:
Sometimes cinemaniacs get rewarded for stepping outside the theater. Scott Weinberg, his tongue possibly in cheek, thinks a viral 4-minute internet video is the best movie of the year. I am convinced that the year's best fiction-on-film (so far -- though I have trouble imagining anything topping it) is currently airing on HBO. That would be Generation Kill, the seven-part, eight-hour Iraq War miniseries from David Simon and Ed Burns (The Wire).

I know, I know: this is Cinematical, not TV Squad. But Generation Kill is something no movie lover should ignore.
[READ THE REST HERE]

I don't get THIS reply though (from random poster):
"It's entertaining but we should never forget that in the end it's fiction. Yeah, I read the book the miniseries is based on and like the tv miniseries it's just one man's entertaining take on events.

It's fun. It's also fake - like all movies. If anything, it does get old after awhile as the types represented in the series, even if based on real humans, feel a little tired. I've enjoyed the series in spurts but overall I find there's nothing locking me to it. There's no real story and as mentioned the characters just aren't that absorbing. So while I'll laugh for 20 minutes, 40 minutes into an episode I find there's nothing emotionally or intellectually tethering me to the events of the episode."
They think it's fiction? Wow.

I first heard about this from Milti on the TS list - Lee Tergesen and James 'PJ' Ransone appeared on the Opie & Anthony show on XM Radio on August 10th, 2008 to yak about Generation Kill. Then [livejournal.com profile] fanfromfla was kind enough to post a f-locked .wma file (JOIN [livejournal.com profile] leeloni, all you lurkers "watchers"!). And then [livejournal.com profile] colleendetroit and I were discussing the obVious LeeLoni bits of the interview, like Lee's blatant worship of Meloni's hot body.

I'm posting the relevant OZ/LeeLoni bits here, and the full transcript of the edited version of the interview is here on my LJ.

Naturally, I had to transcribe & share the article.
No spoilers.

TV's New Grunt Work
'The Wire' was brutal. Now David Simon tries Iraq.

by Joshua Alston

Viewers who are faithful to HBO's enormously intricate cop drama "The Wire" - or even just you dabblers - should know what to expect from "Generation Kill," the new Iraq War mini-series from "The Wire" creator David Simon. That is, a learning curve as steep as a black-diamond ski course and a teeming population of Marine grunts who, like a teeming population of Baltimore cops before them, speak tactical jargon like bards. Simon's programs can feel like homework, but they tend to unfold in surprising ways that reward the massive investment required. "Kill" is no exception.

That said, it's a shame that Simon hasn't learned to sprinkle a little sugar on his harsh critiques. The servicemen of "Kill" are not a pleasant bunch to be around. There are hard-core Marines who didn't join for tuition money but because they wanted a piece of the action. They're second-string athletes itching to get in there and lay waste, and they bide their time lobbing racial slurs at one another and lusting over the grade-school girls who mail them letters of encouragement. The most fascinating of the bunch is Cpl. Ray Person (James Ransone, a former "Wire" denizen), a fount of filthy wisdom who posits that the Iraqis' unsatisfying sex lives are the catalyst for the war.

It's a tough sell to the American audience that has already proven its uninterest in depictions of the Iraq War, from underperforming documentaries like "No End in Sight" and "Taxi to the Dark Side" to Steven Bochco's 2005 dramatic series "Over There," which couldn't even muster a million viewers for its finale. At this point, everyone has a position on the war - you think it's a disaster or you don't - and there's more than enough daily news flotsam to fill the gaps. Plunging into a seven-hour series on the topic just seems like, well, overkill.

But "Kill" has an element that previous attempts have lacked: a proxy for the audience. Lee Tergesen (from HBO's "Oz") plays Evan Ross [sic], the real-life Rolling Stone contributor who's embedded with the battalion and wrote the acclaimed book on which the series is based. The Ross character mirrors all the reactions a viewer is likely to have: he's as baffled, revolted and depressed by what he sees as we are. For him, looking away isn't as easy as flicking at the remote. As engrossing as "Kill" can be, it's grim enough that most viewers won't be able to resist that impulse.

***

Okay, the author obviously got EVAN WRIGHT's name wrong. And I think he could have been a little more generous by saying that because LEE looks baffled, revolted & depressed, he's doing a damn find job! Talk about a back-handed compliment. And yeah, if Lee hadn't been in it, I wouldn't have watched it either - well, no HBO to start, but also because I already read the book. And yeah, it's grim, but hell... it's war. I hope GK ends up getting the viewership that both the show and the topic deserve.

Lee at TCA

Lee is in L.A. at the Television Critics Association semiannual meeting -- which happens to be where my friend Terry, the TV critic for the Knoxville (Tenn.) News Sentinel, is. Terry interviewed him today. He was impressed that Lee remembered him from his set visit to Oz back in 2000 (which I attended with Terry). Terry said Lee was one of the best interviews he's done at TCA and commented on how very friendly Lee was. I told him, "I know!" heheh :>

Terry made a video of Lee that he's going to put up later tonight on his News Sentinel blog site, so be sure to check it out. If it's not up tonight, I know it will be up tomorrow. Click on the link below.

And, don't forget that "Generation Kill" premiers Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern on HBO. As soon as our revamped website goes live, you can read my review of "Kill" at seviercountynews.com in the entertainment section.
