It's that time again. Contract negotiations have begun with the stars of SVU. The show appears poised for renewal, and executive producer Neal Baer is optimistic for a 13th season that includes Marish and Meloni.
The Edmonton Journal reports that although there's no official word on whether Law & Order: SVU will get to Season 13, executive producer Neal Baer told TV Line on Wednesday that he's optimistic that NBC will renew it.
"I would say that chances (of renewal) are very good, given that it's the highest-rated drama on NBC," he said.
Baer is also confident that stars Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hargitay will be back, as well, even though their contracts are up at the end of this season.
"They're as committed to playing Olivia and Elliot as they were the first day I walked in and saw them in the interrogation room. It's an amazing thing that never lags. (Mariska and Chris) are so professional, and the ultimate artists, in that they're there to realize their characters, making them as strong, believable and compelling as possible. And there aren't a lot of opportunities to do that (in television)."
Plus, it's hard to walk away from such a long-standing relationship, even if it's just on screen.
"They're the longest-running drama duo in TV history," Baer said. "I think (they'll be around) as long as they can keep playing new angles within the parameters of the show."
Baer himself is leaving SVU at the end of Season 12, but the Emmy-nominated producer and writer doesn't think that will have any bearing on the show's future at NBC.
"The show is in a really wonderful place creatively, storytelling-wise, and ratings-wise..."

OH NEAL. DO GO ON.
Lastly, and off-topic: "National Lampoon's Dirty Movie": A producer (Christopher Meloni) wants to make the dirtiest movie ever made. OUT ON DVD THIS WEEK.
If only that tagline was true.
